Rarity Handbags began in Cape Town, South Africa over 15 years ago when a local farmer approached the founder, Jacqueline Burge, asking her to create something beautiful with culled hides that would normally be burned. Fifteen years later, Rarity has evolved into a successful Fair Trade Certified “slow fashion” business, and it still uses reclaimed indigenous leather to craft its beautiful bags.
The studio now provides meaningful employment for more than a dozen local artisans, creating much-needed social and economic opportunities for marginalized South African producers and suppliers. Designed in-house, the bags are expertly handcrafted in a happy, productive environment using sustainably-sourced, natural materials. The designs are inspired by a love of Africa and its people, celebrating its diversity and individuality through adventurous, eclectic combinations of color and texture.
